Ride Safe: Know Before You Go

The RTC continues its commitment to safety and has partnered with the Southern Nevada Bicycle Coalition (SNVBC) to promote its Ride Safe: Know Before You Go campaign throughout the month. The educational program identifies five critical points of gear and behavior for cyclists to keep top-of-mind: Protect Your Head, Be Visible, Choose Safe Routes, Be Predictable, and Ride Defensively.

“Cyclists’ behavior and decision-making are integral to achieving a zero-collision goal. As we ask motorists to learn about cyclist behavior and consider our presence on the road, cyclists must be predictable and plan safe routes before riding,” said Rob Hutchinson, SNVBC’s president. “Ride Safe’s points need to be second nature for everyone riding a bicycle, new and seasoned cyclists, alike.”

Let’s Celebrate National Bike Month!

Started back in 1956, the League of American Bicyclists created National Bike Month to spread awareness of the benefits of biking as well as promote safer conditions for riders. Now celebrated from coast to coast, National Bike Month is a chance to showcase the many benefits of bicycling and encourage more folks to give biking a try. This year, RTC Bike Share is bringing our riders exciting updates as we spin into National Bike Month.

New passes, who ‘dis? We have officially updated our pass options to offer you daily, monthly, and yearly pass options. That’s right, you can now purchase your RTC Bike Share pass annually. In addition, our monthly and annual pass options now have reduced fare opportunities for EBT cardholders made possible in part by our partnership with Southern Nevada Health District! We didn’t stop at the pass structure; we went for a full makeover and updated our pass names too!

New passes bring new purchase options. The RTC is the first transit agency in the United States to fully integrate its bike share and public transit systems into a single account and app experience. This new offering, available in the Transit app, enables riders to plan a multimodal trip, purchase a transit pass, and unlock a bike with just a few taps. Riders will still be able to purchase passes on the RTC Bike Share website or the BCycle App. Already using the Transit app? You can visit your closest RTC Bike Share station, open the app, and tap a bike share icon to get started.

RTC Bike Share is electrifying downtown Las Vegas with e-bikes

The Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada (RTC) is introducing five electric pedal-assist bikes to the existing RTC Bike Share program for a limited time.

Starting March 4 through March 18, RTC Bike Share will test an e-bike program with five electric pedal-assist bikes added to its existing 180 classic bikes inventory. Branded with green lightning bolts, the electric bikes are powered by a front wheel pedal-assist motor that allows riders to overcome elevation obstacles and make commutes quicker with speeds up to 17 miles per hour.

Easy to find at any of the 21 bike share locations in downtown Las Vegas, the electric bikes are available for the same price as classic bikes. Riders can purchase a 24-hour pass for $5 or 3-day pass for $10 at any bike share kiosk. Monthly passes are also available online for $20.

After March 18, the RTC will evaluate ridership and feedback to consider whether electric bikes should be added to the bike share program.

One Year Going on Two Wheels: RTC Bike Share celebrates first birthday in style

The Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada (RTC) launched RTC Bike Share last year and is celebrating the first birthday with major milestones.

With 21 stations and 180 bikes located throughout downtown Las Vegas, RTC Bike Share has been a popular transportation option with more than 9,000 passes sold in its inaugural year of operation. In the first year alone, riders completed over 18,000 rides, spanning nearly 60,000 miles while burning more than 2.3 million calories. As a result, users were able to eliminate over 56,000 lbs. of carbon monoxide from the valley.

One organization took notice of the healthy benefits of bike share. The Southern Nevada Health District (SNHD) last month partnered with the RTC for a one-year sponsorship to brand 10 RTC Bike Share bikes that will travel the downtown area until next winter. The specially-branded bikes can be found at any of the 21 stations.

“This program is a prime example of how people can incorporate active transportation into their daily lives to boost their activity levels, lead healthier lives, and contribute to healthier communities,” said Dr. Michael Johnson, Director of Community Health Division for the Southern Nevada Health District. “We are pleased to partner with the RTC on this project and to contribute to a program that provides our residents and visitors the opportunity to bike share as a way to be active and make connections with family and friends while discovering all the great amenities Southern Nevada has to offer.”

To celebrate bike share’s first birthday, the RTC is inviting the community to participate in these activities:

New Station Location Survey

Following a full year of operations, the RTC is evaluating potential new locations for bike share stations within the downtown Las Vegas area. The RTC is seeking community feedback on specific locations including: Plaza Hotel on Carson Avenue, Stratosphere Hotel on Las Vegas Boulevard, Regional Justice Center on Lewis Avenue, El Cortez Hotel on 6th Street and Las Vegas Medical District on Alta Drive and Shadow Lane.

The quick, two-question survey will be available until Nov. 30, 2017, and comments received will be used to assess the locations for new bike share stations. To participate in the survey, visit: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/RTCbikeshare

Gold Bike

A special gold bike will make its first appearance at the Gold & Silver Pawn Shop bike share station on Las Vegas Boulevard today and will be made available for bike share riders. Unicorn bikes, or bikes that exist within the system but have a custom design, are gaining popularity in other cities across the country, and the one-year anniversary is a great opportunity to introduce this concept to downtown Las Vegas.

The RTC will offer clues to its location on its social media accounts and encourage bike share users to find the gold bike. Users who post a photo of themselves riding the gold bike with the hashtags #RTCBikeShare #VegasGoesGold will be entered to win prizes such as Vegas Golden Knights tickets, free bike share rides and other giveaways.

$1 Promotion

Starting today, residents and tourists can take advantage of a special one-year anniversary promotion and partake in the birthday celebration by purchasing a 30-day bike share pass for $1 for the first month when selecting the auto-renew option. Users can use promo code: BDAY1 at check out to receive the first month’s discount. All subsequent months will be charged at the regular price of $20 per month. The promotion will run until Sunday, Dec. 31, and is only available on the RTC Bike Share website.

Birthday Party

To finish the celebration in style, the RTC will host a birthday party at the green space inside the Downtown Container Park from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 3. The party will include music, entertainment, food and a raffle for a free one-year bike share membership.

The event will conclude with a free community bike ride during the First Friday festivities. This event is free and open to all.

RTC’s sizzling summer bike share deal: Half-off 24-hour passes

The Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada (RTC) is offering a sizzling promotion this summer with 24-hour bike share passes for only $4, a 50-percent discount. Beginning Fourth of July weekend through Labor Day tourists and locals can enjoy unlimited 30-minute rides for 24 hours directly from a bike share kiosk.

Currently, 24-hour passes are available only online for $8, but beginning July 1, riders can extend their time in the sun with 24-hour passes directly from any of the 21 station kiosks in downtown Las Vegas for the discounted price.

Single-ride passes will not be available during the summer promotion but instead will be replaced with the 24-hour pass for the same price, providing added value to the bike share rider.

With more than a thousand trips being logged each month, RTC Bike Share is a popular choice for locals and visitors. This promotion provides an additional benefit to current riders and incentivizes new users during the summer months.
